The skirmishes are hard fought, but the desperate farmers and their criminal allies are eventually killed, or learn a lesson in interfering with things beyond their ken. This provides the minions who come through the fighting with valuable combat experience. [Ruthless increases by +1.]

Week 6
Strangely, the reply to the week's divination consists of... gardening advice? Particularly on the care and feeding of carnivorous plants. This may be related to the large, brilliant vermillion blossoms that have sprouted on vines above and around the entrance to the Maw at the base of the Horn.

When Puella asks Sebastian to look at the flowers, he recognizes them with some surprise as immature assassin vines. Puella further deduces that their rapid growth is fueled by the massive amounts of raw magic spilling off the Horn; in another week, at this rate, they will be fully grown and hungry.

Week 7
No dangers threaten the Horn this week. Belial advises Puella to "Eat, drink, and seem to be merry; form chains to bind unsuspecting hearts." And indeed, within a day, a messenger arrives from the Ravens, bearing a letter on expensive vellum, in a gilded scrollcase.

Naming each member of the Knot at the top, it reads, "You are Cordially Invited to the birthday celebration of our Baron Arkov Vandermir, in commemoration of his One-Hundred and Fifth year. Dress is formal." The party is to be at the Baron's manor, starting at sunset on Friday of the week.

Week 8
"Privateers from the far desert sands hunt for emerald eyes. Greed draws them; fire, steel, and gold are their faith."

Two days later, another messenger from Elise arrives, seeming to confirm what the divination revealed:

To the Ninth:
Two new, rival groups of adventurers are in town – they are too visible to attack directly. They assault the Horn soon, unsure of the exact time of arrival. One group call themselves "Traya's Raiders," mentioned something about the ‘left eye’. First level entry?

Traya DeMarco – the leader, a sorceress of some sort.
Valiessa DeMarco - Traya's sister, another mage, unknown specialization.
Hassan J’raaq – a strange foreign barbarian with red skin, horns and a large curved sword.
Tasker Twelve-Knives – half-orc knife specialist, a weakness for pretty women.
Posca the Merchant – dwarven cleric of a god of merchants, greedy above all else.

Other group seems more reckless. Cowed the denizens of Drownington, less information on them.
Martel la Montaigne - nobleman, some kind of sword-mage.
Adus MacMannus - rough, stupid brute.
Lycheas - snivelling sneak thief.
Arissa Lie-Smith - priestess of Loki, Northern god of betrayal

[Minion actions. All rolls in IRC with Kain]

Puella relays her discoveries to her companions, and suggests that the Knot all together could likely attend the Baron's event if they wish, since divination has revealed the week to be safe from external danger.

The raiding parties are active around the Horn, but the singleminded focus on snatching peasants diminishes. Melrov also substitutes for Grumblejack as the primary leader of the raids, as Puella is still hoping to hone the soldier's skills in the Knot's service.

The ranger scores several successes, bringing back an enormous frog to join the boggards as a mascot for the tribe and guardian of the lower caverns. News of the mascot swells the tribe with several eager new recruits.

[hunt monsters; Ruthless 19+8=27; 1d10=6, 1d2=1 Giant Frog. 1d3-1 x3 =2, 0, 1 new boggards]

The week of the Baron's party, however, Puella does order another raid upon one of the independent households who still stand outside the Baron's protection. A small birthday present, to further bedevil the rural households outside of his control. Another batch of farmer's daughters soon swell the population of the Horn, stuffed in boggard sacks and spirited off into the wood in a series of stealthy nighttime raids.

[Ruthless 10+10=20; 2d6=5 abducted]

[Note: Amusingly enough, I also rolled the same random monthly event, and the same Ruthless check result, as last time. 17 on event d20, 21 Ruthless. Once more with feeling, and +1 Ruthless?]

The eigth week, when her magic warns of danger, the raiding parties are recalled and the Horn lies quiet. Waiting.

[Lay low. +1 Secrecy]

During the raids, Melrov's party is attacked by a warband of elves, who skirmish with them repeatedly over a few days. They seem particularly incensed at Melrov himself; perhaps Kana was not so free to teach their ways to outsiders as he believed. Eventually, with weight of numbers and Grumblejack's aid, the raiders are driven off, and Melrov grows more jaded yet.

Puella is waiting up for Melrov one night as the raiders come in with their haul of flesh. After the ranger has disposed of his duties, she invites him to the Knot's refurbished tavern for a drink - watered-down wine for the witch, and she orders him his choice.

"I see you have been discharging your duties admirably, soldier." she begins. "Yet you seem very glum at times. I would like to be sure that the Knot is rewarding you as your service deserves."

She wets her lips with wine.

"Elaine shall continue to receive the very best, of course - but what of you? Surely there are some comforts which might ease your own days and nights?"

Melrov takes a drink from the strongest and most abrasive offering the bar can produce - which, using a recipe left over from the Sons, is rather vile indeed. "Elaine is all that I care about. Her safety all the reward I ever asked for. That was the bargain my deal with the Devil. I deserve no ease or comfort."

Much more quietly, in a voice that Puella is clearly not meant to hear, he adds, "in this life or the next."

"And you well know that by our oath we saved Elaine from Aldencross, and continue to protect her. She sends you her love, by the way. But if I say you are deserving of some further reward, soldier, please do not argue the point."

She gives him a severe look for a moment before softening, glancing at his cup.

"I can see that drink is one comfort to you. For now, accept this small token."

She brings forth the flask of good dwarven whiskey the Knot recently acquired - no less strong than Melrov's vile brew, but quite a bit finer.

"Is that an order, ma'am?"

He takes the flask from her and stares at it a moment, before gulping it down, barely tasting it. Yorgun would no doubt shed a tear if he saw it.

Puella refills the man's cup often, wondering if it will loosen his tongue. She keeps up, nominally, but the wine she is drinking, watered down as usual, is in no danger of clouding her judgment.
