Nearly a full day after the Ashen Nightmare departs, Hexor jerks in sudden remembrance of something, and teleports to Puella.

"Mistress, I do beg your forgiveness... I believe I forgot one aspect of the Horn that you may wish to know of. I was never privy to the exact secret, but there is a method by which teleportation magics can pierce the veil of Vetra-Kali. I believe it only works from the inside going out, so it shouldn't be too great of a worry, I trust." The daemon coughs nervously.

The witch looks up from her work, setting her black wrought-iron tongs to reheat over a brazier of coals. The hooded man locked in her spiked chair moans softly.

"It was right of you to tell me quickly. Use mind-speech to do so in the future, though, if you should recall anything else."

"Ezra would have been privy to the exact secret, I expect?"

The moaning increases in volume. The prisoner has realized someone else has arrived and is trying to beg for help, evidently through a gag.

"Almost certainly, madam. Indeed, he is likely the one being remaining on this plane that would still know it. That will change, of course, once the Master returns."

"Very good, Hexor. There is a pair being held next door - Idelle and Cedric are their names. She broke a shovel, he dropped a load of bricks. Both have confessed to doing so deliberately in order to slow the work, and are here waiting for punishment. You may have a day's leave with them, subject to your usual restrictions."

Puella turns her attention back to the hooded prisoner as the moans grow distractingly loud.

"That won't do, Cantor. Save your voice. You will need it."

The witch returns to her work.

Minion Actions through Week 25

(Some details to be provided later - all actions added to the first post log)

In the weeks after that fateful night, when Mitra's Sun rose on a Farholde from which the Sisters of Saint-Cynthia-Celeste had vanished in a night of blood and screams, the Bound's depredations grow bolder. Who can stop them now?

Now not just outlying rural households, but even the dwellers in Westell have to fear waking up one morning to find their neighbors houses standing empty, the families within snatched in the night and carried off to Mitra knows where. Children too young to work are often left behind, though. They fall into the loving arms of the Vandermir Orphanage - and it is a fortunate stroke indeed that the Baron deeded his wealth to the Orphanage that it might provide for these new waves of inmates.

In Farholde itself, new crime waves strike the streets, as numerous gangs based in Drownington take advantage of the breakdowns in law and order. Many a townsperson on their way home at night is beaten and robbed, many a merchant is forced to choose between paying protection money and seeing their business go up in flames. It seems that with the Baron's death and Sir Valin's disappearance, the lawlessness that was simmering just under Farholde's surface is now open and unrestrained.

Many of the Knot's new minions are given chances to blood themselves in these combats. Thaelekar, the young Caer Bryr elven warrior who had been so eager to prove himself in battle, is placed in charge of tracking down and capturing a mate for One-Eye - and after that, of leading the raids from the Briar upon Farholde households. The Heavenly One, the Pious One, Gerrard, Grumblejack - each has their turn in battle as well.

But after weeks of running riot, Sir Valin disappears... and word comes to the Bound from on high. The weeks of running riot in Farholde are over. A change is in the air...

[65 new captives and 2424 gp. Details on espionage and connections actions, as well as tiger hunt, to follow]

Week 19d: Minions+Thaelekar Tiger Hunt (33)

Week 25c: Minions+Kaitlyn Spread Disinformation - Espionage 29

The battle against the merchant caravan was not Thaelekar's first moment of glory. No, that was a rather different hunt...

In town, already on the verge of panic after the reign of terror that has followed the Sisters' disappearance, with the Mayor calling out the militia, rumors begin to circulate. Nobody seems quite sure where these rumors began. Whispers around the congregation at Church? Families of the missing desperate for an explanation? Militiamen or figures of authority eager to point the finger somewhere else?

Their content, however, is explosive. When the Orphanage began to move into the Sisters' abbey, it is claimed... the new tenants found records. Secret records. Records that show that it was the Sisters of Saint Cynthia-Celeste who stirred up this great evil from the jungle that has so afflicted Farholde. In their fanatic quest to root out evil, they overreached, and awoke some dire foe, out in the depths sinister wood, that consumed them...

Nobody seems to have seen these records, but everybody seems to have a cousin, or a partner, or a friend who has seen it all and swore on Mitra's holy ghost that every word is true.

It all started with one Sister Marta, the rumors say, always off on expeditions into the jungle. She went somewhere she shouldn't have, touched something she shouldn't have... awoke something. Many stories agree that it must have been in the Horn, and it must have been Sister Marta who triggered the strange bursts of light... those few voices with first-hand knowledge, who remember that she only left a few days later, are soon drowned out.

From there, the rumors swirl and build. The Abbey was staging secret expeditions of inquisitors to strike into the jungle, intent on destroying this evil they had awoken before their folly could be discovered. But not only did the Sisters' plan fail... the defeat of this expedition supposedly led these monsters straight back to Farholde.

None can seem to agree on precisely what the foe is. Creeping poisonous jungle worms who burrowed under the earth and ate the Sisters alive in a night, claims one wild-eyed drinker. Hateful elven ghosts seeking revenge for the ancient Conquest, another cooly explains - pointing to elven arrows found at several recent murder sites. The Devil come to take his due, a few voices whisper - but not too loudly, lest he hear. Black cannibal savages from the heart of the jungle, seeking the tender roast flesh of chaste Mitran virgins, shrieks an excitable old lady in the middle of the town square. The Sons of the Pale Horsemen - Sister Marta must have inadvertently breached a tomb, and they have risen in undeath - is a popular theory in many quarters.

But one thing is for certain, the rumors claim. It was the Sister's meddling that brought this on Farholde - they meant the best, but they were always too eager to stir up a battle against evil, and now the common man must pay the price.

And as for she who first started these rumors? It's an odd thing. Every witness seems to describe her differently.

[Disinformation campaign - convince the populace of something that isn't true - adventuring Sisters of Saint Cynthia-Celeste delved too greedily and too deep in their fanaticism against evil, and stirred up whatever is now preying upon the common folk. Espionage 29]

Meanwhile, there is one last spasm of violence, as if to spit in the face of the impotent Mayor, Hugo Hallynbeck, and his resolve to call out the militia. Almost thirty people vanish from houses all over town in the space of a single week. Single workers, couples, entire families, go home to bed and are never seen again.

The crowning humiliation comes when one of the boldest of the militia leaders rushes off to investigate a disapperance, spends half the night fruitlessly following cold trails... only for a panicked neighbor to finally locate him and tell him that his very own house is in flames and his wife and children are nowhere to be found.

Ruthless checks - Week 26.
