[b]Week 3

The week following Hallack's ill-fated invasion is surprisingly uneventful for our villains. No adventurers arrive in Farholde, though a stir is caused when not one, but two new murdered corpses are discovered. Both murder scenes are rather grisly; one a dissected prostitute, the other a father of two who had just lost his job due to a head injury. In the latter case, it appears as though the man's skull was opened, and his brain cut apart while he was still alive.

The sisters of St. Cynthia-Celeste post notices throughout town, offering a 500 gp reward for information about the current whereabouts of the missing Sister Marta Dian.

Week 4

Another anonymous messenger from the White Ravens arrives, bearing two letters this time; one for the Knot as a whole, one addressed directly to Gaerlan.

The first reads: "New adventurers in town, calling themselves Brendam's Breakers. They have been broken. No further difficulties. - Z

The second is even shorter and more to the point. I would like to speak with you, in person. - Elise

500 gp cannot tempt Lucavi into betraying his friends yet. Perhaps if it were larger.

OOC: Just so it shows up in my egoposts feed.

Puella sends a missive to the Baron the day after Hallack's Crew attacks, with one request, and one piece of advice.

Knowing well that the Baron owns nearly all of the farmland in Westell, and much of the loosely affiliated patchwork of rural farms to the south, she requests a list of those properties that remain free of his influence.

She advises that he have his soldiers and guards put in a presence and some military patrols in the area, so that there will be a plausible explanation why the Knot's upcoming predations will target the independent farmers and leave the Baron's holdings largely alone. She even offers to sacrifice a band of boggards sometime to one of the Baron's patrols, to improve the image of the whole thing and help drive yet more independent farmers to his protection.

In this way, she intends on three goals - to cement the Baron's power base yet further, thus rewarding him for his support - to blood the minions and especially their cohort leaders, getting them useful combat experience without too-great danger - and to gather yet more flesh for the Knot's dungeons in Abaddon.

[Week 3 divination in other thread, failed. Week 4 divination, failed. Week 5 divination, passed. Week 6 divination, failed]

[Will roll action checks for weeks 1-6 once divination results for Week 5 are in and I know whether to release Grumble that week. Melrov will be released for the other weeks, to hone his new man-hunting skills in action.]

[Edit: Up through Week 5, 35 kidnapped, 7 new boggard recruits.]

Baron Vandemir's chortles are practically audible through the letter of agreement he sends to Puella, complete with the details she requested.

The one successful divination yields the following: "Beware the children of the sacred moon."

The raiders on the first group are successful, but spotted on their way back to the Horn, as Grumble got a bit overenthusiastic with his "Merry Murder." [Roll Secrecy.]

In the second week, Grumblejack's group is late coming back the first night... how long will our villains wait before sending out searchers?

The ogre seems oblivious to being watched, perhaps feeling safe as he leaves the farmlands behind and enters the edge of the wood. He is taking far too much glee in playing with his catch, pricking the feet of the rear prisoner in the chained gang whenever she slows down, and chuckling at every jump and whimper. Meanwhile, the boggard runners accompanying him burble unhelpfully in their strange tongue, while some of Gaerlan's toughs whistle and taunt the comlier women (or in one case, men). All in all, not a stealthy affair.

[Secrecy 3]

Puella neither waits nor searches. Knowing that the ogre's transformation has made him magic-resistant, she instead visits the rooms of the minions sent with him, retrieves some knickknack or change of clothing, and goes to work at her scrying mirror.

[Probably a -4 on minion Will save, unless he's leaving body parts around. DC 20.]

[And that's a -1 to your Secrecy score.]

Puella easily finds the group with her magic. A few humans have been left in charge, with boggards surrounding the prisoners. Grumblejack is nowhere to be seen, and they all appear to be standing around in a half-ruined barn. One of the men approaches another, and asks "Don't you think we shoudl get going soon? They'll..."

"**** no! You see what the ogre did to that guy stuck him with a pitchfork? That'll be us, if we aren't waiting here like he said when he gets back! I'm staying until the brute comes for us, or the big bosses come looking; let them deal with him."

[Adjusted OOC thread with -1 Secrecy]

Puella takes a moment to consider. The odds that Grumblejack is truly in some sort of trouble that would require rescue, out in the rural boondocks surrounding Farholde, seem... low. The ogre can fly, resist all elements, shrug off sword-blows like a devil, blot out the light, and see in the dark. Oh, and he's strong enough to rip a sturdy warrior in two with his bare hands. No, it's unlikely he needs rescue.

The odds that he's found some diversion that has distracted him from his mission? Admittedly rather higher. Still, that would be no excuse for a breach of discipline in the troops he'd left behind.

The witch's voice issues forth from the empty air, in the middle of the barn.

"If Grumblejack ordered you to hold your ground, then you will do so. Meanwhile, report."

The two men easily jump a foot in the air, and all others present flinch away from the voice. As they land, they immediately scramble to kneel, as the frog-men prostrate themselves.

"Mistress! We meant no disrespect... the mission was a success, and so far we've been undetected on this trip. Half a dozen prisoners safe and secured, though we are a bit closer to town than we came last time... Mr. Jack and a couple of the others left us here. He... he said he was going into town."

"Report your location. I will have another band nearby in case of danger."

"If your commander has not returned by an hour before dawn, you may move. Be in the wood before light. Till then, you know your orders."

That should give him plenty of time to do whatever he was going to do.

Puella does indeed roust out some of the new boggard recruits and sends them off in case anything should befall the first band before Grumblejack rejoins them. She wonders idly if Grumblejack is using the recovered iron circlet to sneak into town for fun.

Then, not very much concerned, she goes to bed for the night. She'll hear the ogre's explanation when he returns.

Grumblejack and his party return near sunset the next day, nearly a full day later than expected... and missing one or two minions, as well as two prisoners, with another being carried unconscious. "He made me mad, so's Grumblejack gave him a little tap," the ogre says of the knocked-out man. Of the missing ones, he is rather more reluctant, throwing out a few laughably obvious evasions ("I dunno," "Dey went away," and so forth) until the story is dragged out. After teasing out the story through his boasting, blame-shifting and general side-tracks, the Knot discerns the following.

It seems that after the first week of raids, a few of the independent farmers banded together with each other and some friends from town, and began trying to fight back. Their efforts were persistent, but largely ineffective; after having another good fight, Grumblejack decided he was thirsty, and using Kael's recovered circlet, went to have a drink at Lord Drownington's Manor. Inevitably, a brawl began, and the circle was knocked off in the confusion.

Rather surprisingly, neither the usual patrons, nor the owner Rubaal Thaam have any problem drinking with an ogre. However, the crowd happened to include one of the disgruntled farmers who had been harrassing them and survived the battle; after Grumblejack awoke the next morning, he was too hungover to notice he was being followed, and the group was ambushed along the road. They were victorious of course, but this may or may not be a persistent problem.

[Functionally identical to the "turf war" event. Roll Ruthless.]
