Lysander and Valian rightly deduce that the Orb is somehow related to the berserker, but the details elude them.

Seeing no reason not to share what he already learned about the compelling orb before this, Valian relates the story of his earlier encounter with Sergius and Nebin to them.

<DungeonMaster> "Oh, Valian, that orb you're holding. That is how Sergius compelled the outlaws to become cannibals. It's called the Compelling Orb. It was Nebin's 'mystical item' he first brought you here for.

<Valian> "How does it work?" Valian asks.

<DungeonMaster> "Well, it's very powerful and dangerous. After atuning to it, you can use it to put a compulsion into someone's mind. You sort of...state a role for them to follow, and if they can't resist the magic they obey it. From the notes I've read Sergius weakened the outlaws' wills with drugs, and of course had those who could resist killed."

<DungeonMaster> "But it has side effects on the user. I don't know what. Naturally Sergius wasn't aware of them."

You are all aware that the awake berserker is staring directly at the orb.

"Then get the blasphemous thing away from him. In fact, let us destroy it, before it can do more harm."

"Its simply a tool. One I fear we do not know enough about. Would you destroy an oven before you learned to make bread?" Sam asks.

"Either make use of your tool or put it away so we can interrogate this man and his surviving companions."

Valian tosses the Orb to Mez. "Our noble King will decide."

As Mezentius catches the orb, he suddenly has a thought: such power belongs to him. Attuning to the orb would give him influence he needs to defeat all of his foes. It would be so simple...

Mezentius catches the Orb, and looks down at it for a long moment with furrowed brow before speaking.

"Then hear my decision. Twice now this talisman has gone together with cannibalism, that most vile of perversions. I think it is most likely that an item created by the Alchemists' Guild will serve no cause but that of evil, and I forbid any among our number to attempt to use it. I myself shall guard it vigilantly against any such use. It will be safe in my hands..."

He wraps the Orb and puts it away, well out of the berserker's sight, then strides up and clasps the former enemy's shoulder.

"Now. Summon your willpower and recall that you are a man, not a ravenous beast. Throw off your hunger for flesh, hateful to the immortal gods, and think only of the salvation of the Duchy!"

Make a Charisma (persuasion) check, Mezentius, with disadvantage. Someone roll for him if he can't.
