My trick has always been to take an existing map and write my own names onto it.

Definitely an option.

These are fine for continent maps, sure, but I need a local one. I made a giant freshwater lake with at least one miles-long and wide island and it's ruining everything.

So unless I am failing to recall something, last night was my first time actually playing 5e, rather than DMing. It's also the first time in years that I've actually played any D&D. It was fun. Only problems I had were due to the interface rather than anything involving the rules of play, the other players, or our XP miser of a DM.

I'm still in that early phase where I'm still establishing my character, figuring out how he feels about things, how he reacts to certain kinds of situations. He's very much a showoff, quick to lie when he thinks it is to his advantage, and eager to retreat when he suspects something going south. When his vainglory and self-preservation instincts are in conflict his behavior may become mercurial, even erratic. If he starts to care about something besides himself this could all change, though.

I definitely got to say if you don't have the Perform skill you are basically wasting your time at this game. Best skill by far. It may not actually get people do to things like Persuasion or Intimidate do, but what evs.

So, my reactions were less than ideal last night, so I'm resolving to make the following changes.

One, when I need to pause to get material I'll let you know.

Two, I'll keep my opinions of your awful choices to myself.

Three, I'll look into numbering my monsters.

I would appreciate the following from my players.

When you roll damage mention the damage type. Even if I should already know it.

If your ability has a save DC mention the DC and save type. Again, even if by all accounts I should already know it.

Do not under any circumstances roll unless I tell you to. Only exception to this is joke rolls when there is no other rolling going on. The more I have to scroll back and forth the longer everything takes.

I had a pretty good time last night, and will try to follow those requests in the future.
