Puella does not much test Myrtle's scrying protections after that. If she is still in the presence of a powerful mystic even after weeks, the safest theory is that he is attending her constantly. And there are risks to launching a new scrying against a wary opponent, that go well beyond losing the spell. Instead, she summarizes what she has learned in a missive to Gaerlan. Myrtle appears to have enrolled in direct service to the Church. A powerful Mitran mystic serves as her bodyguard and is protecting her from scrying through means yet to be ascertained. Both appear to be in residence in a place called the Vale of Valtaerna, one of Mitra's greatest strongholds in the nation.

The other is a simpler matter. One night, in the black hour after midnight, a small team assembles in the courtyard outside the witch's door. Just The Pious One and Puella herself, for this mission.

"You have the oil that I prepared for you?" The witch is curt. A nod, and Puella continues. "Good. Use it if our arrival wakes her. It will silence any cry for help."

"And boy." Puella regards her companion. "You understand that our purpose is greater than just tying up a loose end? They are coming back alive."

The preacher nods again.

They proceed out past the portcullis, into the starless night. A word of power, Elise's spell turned to Puella's ends, to whisk them away across the astral to that distant bedroom that the witch has spied upon.

Roll indicates on target arrival.

As Puella weaves her spell of teleportation, her vigilant mind detects an outside force interfering with her spell, attempting to change her destination. Wherever she lands, it will be somewhere within the Vale of Valtaerna, but she cannot be sure exactly where. Unable to overcome the interference, she manages to cut off her chant and abort the spell, dispersing its energies at the last moment.

She tries again on successive days, but luck is not with her, and she neither breaks through nor is drawn into the trap She does sense that her familiarity with the strange veil (it's almost too diffuse to really call a proper spell) is helping her begin to compensate, however.

Puella turns to her libraries, particularly the many tomes of magic looted from the Sisters' vaults. Surely within the Sisters' vaults is a tome that will help her understand Mitran defenses?

It seems to be a low-grade blessing, placed over the entire Vale by its association with the greater holy sites within. This "threshold" effect has been strengthened over the years by countless prayers of the faithful, and guided by rituals and the aid of angelic advisers. It is intended primarily as a defense against fiends, though as Puella has found, it works against mortal arcanists as well. The tomes do not speak of exactly where it places uninvited guests, but do indicate that a true and devout follower of Mitra would find it no hindrance.

(OOC: familiarity with the effect gives +4 on the CL check to bypass it, anything that blocks alignment detection gives a +2, being accompanied by a celestial gives +3, and a sincere prayer of devotion and contrition to Mitra passes it automatically (albeit with significant other consequences!).)

Puella dismisses the Pious One. Her friend, she has discovered, has already provided her the key to this kingdom.

Once more Puella dwells upon Lucavi's memory, as she meets his daughter at midnight upon the pinnacle of the Horn.

"Be firm, but not violent, Ajora, love. We are after runaways, not murderers."

"Be gentle, Aunt Puella. Yes, I understand." A beatific smile, and Puella speaks her spell.

[CL check 28]

This time, the abduction goes off nearly without a hitch. The peasant girl does manage to let out a strangled scream of fear and despair as Ajora grabs hold of her, before the deceptively slender half-breed's firm grip cuts off her mouth. Puella's second teleportation carries them away and back to the Knot's territory before anyone who heard her can arrive.

The would-be tavern wenches come to in the Horn's second-floor cells, to Ajora's mellifluous voice.

"Sorry about the cells. Aunt Puella insisted. Or should I say," Ajora tries out a deep, mock-solemn sounding voice, "SHE insisted, She whose name we dare not speak, the mighty, the remote!"

The half-angel laughs lightly.

"She's right, of course. You ran away once, right? But don't worry too much. I'm here to look after you now. Aunt Puella is going to show you to everyone, she wants to show all the other girls and boys that running away doesn't work." Ajora wrinkles her nose. "There's probably going to be a punishment. You know Aunt Puella always wants to help people learn from their mistakes. But she'll look after you, too, I know, and I'll be there too to make sure you'll be all right afterward. And then things can go back to normal."

Ajora reaches through the bars to squeeze one girl's hand, with a bright smile.

"So, well, besides all that, welcome back! Everybody missed you."
