With the Baron dead and gone, there seems to be no barrier left to the Knot's consolidation of complete control over the former Vandermir Orphanage. Hardly has his will been read - providing a lasting beneficence to sustain his charity - but the Orphanage, in the person of its headmaster Bergill Mott, announces plans to move into the former Abbey of Saint Cynthia-Celeste.

"There are so many new orphans, and more every day, in these dark times. Far too many for the building we have." he explains to Hugo Hallynbeck. "At least this way... some small good can come of this great tragedy. The Abbey has enough room now to give every one of these poor young souls a loving home."

With the change in venue will also come a change in name, the Headmaster explains. No longer will they be the Vandermir Orphanage. In honor of those lost to the depredations - good souls all - the orphans who were once their children will now be known as the Sons of Duty and the Daughters of Mercy. And of course their caretakers, the staff, the Brothers of Duty and Sisters of Mercy.

A small bright day in a dark time.

The Abbey has one other feature to recommend it over the old building, besides room.

It has walls. Tall stone walls. Thick stone buildings. Many a cloistered cell once used for meditation, many a cellar far from public view.

It is, in short, easy to keep private what goes on behind these walls.

*****************************************

There had been a woman in red standing next to the headmaster when he made his announcement. Odd - few knew her, yet she seemed quite at home. And now she is stepping up to give a short speech at the opening. Headmaster Mott introduces her as Miss Ella, a traveling teacher from the South and a good friend of the institution.

The days when the Orphanage's chronic lack of funds and staff left scofflaw children running around picking pockets and hustling travelers are over, she remarks to the small, picked audience invited to attend the school's opening. A few of the local notables, whoever is left - Lady Marsten, Mallory Ritkin, Mayor Hallynbeck, nobody else worth mentioning. A few old retired clergymen of Mitra, mostly irascible elders stuck in the last century, not a gods-touched miracle worker among them but many a finger-wagger and scolder to be found.

The new era will be an era of proper education and stern, though loving correction, she assures them. After all, we must be concerned not only with filling orphan's bellies, but for their immortal souls.

Henceforth, she promises, the Orphanage will work to be known as an institution that turns out well-mannered, disciplined young men and women.
